Last updated: September 29, 2026. Prices in US dollars; Guatemalan prices converted at about 7.7 quetzales per dollar.

The quick answer

The two capitals cost almost the same. One person renting a central one-bedroom needs about $1,660 a month in San Salvador and roughly $1,590 in Guatemala City. Guatemala City is slightly cheaper on rent and utilities, while San Salvador wins on internet, phone plans and currency stability, because El Salvador uses the US dollar.

Budgets by neighborhood

In both cities, neighborhood matters more than the city averages. In San Salvador, a comfortable life in a central area such as Escalón or San Benito, with private health insurance, costs about $2,100 a month for one person. In Guatemala City, a comfortable budget in Zona 10, the main expat and business district, runs about $1,800 to $2,500, while Zona 4 can work on $1,000 to $1,500 and Zona 14 or Cayalá start around $2,000 to $2,200.

Currency: the hidden difference

El Salvador has used the US dollar since 2001, so anyone earning in dollars pays exactly what the price tag says. Guatemala uses the quetzal, which means a dollar budget moves with the exchange rate. For retirees and remote workers paid in dollars, that predictability is a real advantage of San Salvador.

Taxes and residency

  • El Salvador: retirees with a foreign pension of at least $1,226.40 a month can apply for pensioner residency, and foreign pensions are not taxed locally. See our guide to retiring in El Salvador.
  • Guatemala: the tax system is generally territorial, meaning it mainly taxes income earned inside the country, which also favors people living on foreign income. Confirm your own situation with a local tax adviser.

Which city fits you?

  • Choose San Salvador if you want a dollar economy, a clearly defined retirement residency and quick access to Pacific beaches.
  • Choose Guatemala City if you want slightly lower rents and utilities, a larger city, and easy weekend access to Antigua and Lake Atitlán.

Is Guatemala cheaper than El Salvador?

Slightly, in the capitals: rent and utilities are a bit lower in Guatemala City. The difference is small enough that your neighborhood and lifestyle matter more than the country.

Which is better for someone earning in US dollars?

El Salvador, if you value predictability: there is no exchange-rate risk because the dollar is the official currency.
