The quick answer
Google started rolling out Personal Intelligence for Gemini on Android Auto on October 20, so Gemini can pull details from your Gmail, Calendar, Photos, Maps, YouTube and Search history to answer spoken requests while you drive. It is opt-in, limited to personal Google accounts of people 18 and older, and not available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the UK or Nigeria. If you already turned it on in the Gemini phone app, it carries over to your car automatically.
What happened
In a post on its Keyword blog, Google announced that Gemini is now available globally on Android Auto and in cars with Google built-in, and that Personal Intelligence, the feature that lets Gemini draw on your own Google apps, is coming along with it. The rollout to Android Auto began the same day and is gradual, so not everyone will see it at once. Cars with Google built-in (vehicles that run Google’s software directly, without a phone) will get it “in the coming months.” 9to5Google, Engadget and gHacks reported the same details.
What changes for you
Until now, asking an assistant in the car worked best when you said exactly what you wanted: a full address, a contact name, a song. Personal Intelligence lets Gemini fill in the blanks itself by looking through the apps you’ve connected. Google gives examples like these:
| You say something like… | Where Gemini looks |
|---|---|
| “What’s my flight gate, and is it on time?” | Booking emails in Gmail, plus live flight information |
| “Take me to my doctor’s appointment.” | Calendar events and confirmation emails |
| “Navigate to the car wash I took a photo of last week.” | Google Photos |
| “Go to the coffee shop we talked about yesterday.” | Your recent activity and saved places |
| “Find an indoor restaurant on my route with vegetarian options.” | Maps plus preferences Gemini has learned from your apps |
If you don’t turn it on, nothing breaks: navigation, music, calls and general questions keep working through Gemini. The answers just won’t be tailored to your schedule or history.
How to turn it on (or off)
- Update the Gemini and Android Auto apps from Google Play on your Android phone.
- Open the Gemini app and go to its settings.
- Turn on Personal Intelligence and choose which apps to connect (Gmail and Calendar through Workspace, Photos, Maps, YouTube, Search). Connect only what you’re comfortable with.
- Connect your phone to the car as usual and ask Gemini a question by voice.
- To stop it, switch Personal Intelligence off in Gemini settings, or remove individual apps from the connected list.
Because the rollout is gradual, you may need to wait a few days or weeks for it to work in the car even after enabling it on your phone. For background on Gemini’s newest model and plans, see our explainer on Gemini 4 Argon in the Gemini app.
Privacy and safety: what to think about
- Shared cars and passengers. Answers are spoken aloud. If your email or calendar holds private details, think twice about connecting them when others ride with you.
- Cars with Google built-in. Google says personal answers are shared only when you’re in the car with your phone connected, which helps if the car is shared.
- Check before you go. AI assistants can misread an email or pick the wrong event. For important trips such as flights or medical appointments, confirm the address on screen before driving off, and only when stopped.
Who is affected, and who isn’t
Can use it: adults 18 and older with a personal Google account, an Android phone with the Gemini app, and a car that supports Android Auto, outside the excluded regions below.
Can’t use it yet: people in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Nigeria; anyone signed in with a work, school or university (Workspace) account; and users under 18. Google hasn’t given a timeline for the excluded regions. Owners of cars with Google built-in also need to wait for the later rollout.
iPhone users: this announcement covers Android Auto, which works only with Android phones.
FAQ
Is Personal Intelligence on by default?
No. Your apps stay disconnected until you turn it on. The one shortcut is that if you already enabled it in the Gemini phone app, Android Auto uses the same setting.
Do I need a paid Google AI plan?
Google’s announcement for cars does not list a subscription requirement; it describes eligibility in terms of age, account type and region. Check the Gemini app’s settings to see whether the option appears for your account.
Why don’t I see it in my car yet?
The rollout is staged, so availability varies by account. Make sure both apps are updated, that Personal Intelligence is on in Gemini, and that you aren’t in one of the excluded countries.
