The quick answer

OpenAI is gradually rolling out GPT-Live-1.1, an updated voice model for ChatGPT Voice, along with a smaller version called GPT-Live-1.1 Quip. The update promises more natural accents and adds new voices for French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean and Mexican Spanish, plus a new English voice; you can switch voices under Settings, then Voice, once your account receives it.

What happened

In its ChatGPT release notes dated October 15, OpenAI said GPT-Live-1.1 and GPT-Live-1.1 Quip are rolling out in ChatGPT Voice. GPT-Live is the model that powers spoken conversations in ChatGPT, where you talk and it answers out loud. Version 1.1 focuses on sounding more natural across languages, especially with accents.

Until now, ChatGPT’s standard voice options mostly sounded like English speakers, even when you talked in another language. The new lineup adds voices designed for specific languages, so a conversation in Japanese or Mexican Spanish can sound like a native speaker rather than an English voice speaking that language. OpenAI also added an English voice named Bubbie. The company notes that the voices you see may differ by region and account.

What changes for you

If you use ChatGPT Voice in English, the main difference is a new voice option and a model update that should feel smoother. If you speak another of the supported languages, the change is bigger: you can choose a voice that fits the language, which makes practice conversations, translation help or hands-free use while cooking or driving sound more natural.

Which version of the model you get depends on your plan. Reporting on OpenAI’s voice FAQ indicates that free and lower-cost tiers rely on the smaller Quip model with tighter daily time limits, while higher paid plans get the full GPT-Live-1.1 model and more voice time. OpenAI’s own FAQ is the place to check current limits for your plan, since they can change.

How to switch to a new ChatGPT voice

  1. Update the ChatGPT app from the App Store or Google Play so you have the newest version.
  2. Open Settings in ChatGPT and go to Voice.
  3. Select Voice and listen to the samples. Pick one that matches the language you speak most with ChatGPT.
  4. Start a voice conversation and test it. You can switch back at any time from the same menu.

If you do not see any new voices, your account has not received the update yet. Because the rollout is gradual, the fix is to wait a few days and check again, not to reinstall the app.

A quick privacy check

Voice features process what you say, so it is worth reviewing your data controls in ChatGPT’s settings, including whether your conversations can be used to improve models. The same habit applies to other assistants; we explained a similar setting in our article on Claude’s voice data training option.

Who is affected, and who isn’t

Most affected: people who talk to ChatGPT in French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean or Spanish, and language learners who use voice mode for speaking practice. Regular English-speaking voice users get a new voice option and the updated model.

Not affected: people who only type to ChatGPT. Nothing changes in text chats. If you want background on OpenAI’s other recent changes, see our explainers on GPT-6 and ChatGPT’s Intelligent UI and GPT-6.1 Sol. Google users can compare with the recent changes to the Gemini app.

FAQ

Is GPT-Live-1.1 available on the free plan?

Free users have limited voice access, reportedly through the smaller Quip model. Paid plans get more voice time, and higher tiers get the full model. Check OpenAI’s voice FAQ for the current details for your plan.

Why don’t I see the new voices?

The rollout is gradual, and OpenAI says available voices vary by region and account. Update the app and check Settings, then Voice, again in a few days.

Does this change ChatGPT’s text answers?

No. GPT-Live-1.1 is the voice conversation model; typed chats are not affected by this update.
