Where you live changes the picture more than any other decision:
- Escazú and Santa Ana are the most in-demand western suburbs. Furnished one-bedrooms typically run $900 to $1,600, and good two-bedroom homes $1,400 to $2,300.
- Rohrmoser and La Sabana offer modern apartments and good infrastructure at mid-to-upper prices, with furnished one-bedrooms around $700 to $1,100.
- Los Yoses and Barrio Escalante, on the east side, are walkable and full of restaurants; furnished one-bedrooms run about $700 to $1,200.
- Downtown (El Centro) is the cheapest, with one-bedrooms from $500 to $800, but it is noisy and congested, and most foreigners prefer to live elsewhere.

Imported products are the main budget killer: brand-name and specialty foods cost far more than local staples. Eating at sodas, the small local diners, and shopping at farmers’ markets keeps food costs reasonable, while restaurants in Escazú and Santa Ana charge noticeably more than those in central districts.
Utilities, internet and transport
- Basic utilities for a 915 sq ft apartment average about $95 a month. Regulators cut electricity tariffs by 4.9% to 16.4% from January 2026, but air conditioning can still raise bills sharply in warmer homes.
- Home internet of 60 Mbps or more costs about $62, and a mobile plan around $36.
- Public transport: a bus ticket is about $1.10 and a monthly pass around $66. Gasoline averages about $1.50 per liter.
- Cars are expensive. Import taxes add roughly 52% to 79% of a vehicle’s value depending on its age, although qualifying new foreign residents can import up to two personal vehicles tax-free.
Healthcare and the Caja
Every approved legal resident must join the Caja (CCSS), Costa Rica’s public health and pension system, and pay a monthly contribution. Self-funded residents such as retirees and rentistas pay a percentage of declared income on a scale from about 7% to 19%, with a minimum of roughly $35 to $45 a month. Many foreigners also buy private insurance for faster access to specialists.
Families and schooling
Education is where family budgets climb fastest. A private full-day preschool averages close to $1,000 a month per child, and international primary schools average about $17,000 a year, although fees vary widely by school.

Rent in San José is similar to San Salvador, but everyday costs are about a third higher, so the total budget is higher too.
