The quick answer
If you got Google AI Pro free with a Pixel 11, a Googlebook, a Chromebook, a carrier deal or a student offer, you’re on a trial, and trials don’t get every perk paying subscribers get. Google’s own support pages confirm that YouTube Premium Lite and the 10% Google Store credit are excluded until you pay, and Google’s developer docs keep trial accounts out of the bigger Gemini 4 Argon allowance in its Antigravity coding tool. The core benefits, including higher Gemini limits and 5 TB of storage, are still included.
What happened
The gap came to light this week when Google expanded Gemini 4 Argon in Antigravity, its AI development tool, for paid AI Pro subscribers. Users noticed that Google’s model documentation lists “Google AI Pro (Trial)” separately from paid plans, and on October 16 both 9to5Google and Android Authority documented the other perks that trial members don’t receive. Neither outlet had received a detailed response from Google at the time.
The issue matters because Google hands out long trials with many products and advertises them at their full monthly value. Google AI Pro normally costs $19.99 a month.
| Benefit | Paid AI Pro | Free trial |
|---|---|---|
| Expanded Gemini limits and Gemini in Google apps | Yes | Yes |
| 5 TB cloud storage | Yes | Yes |
| YouTube Premium Lite (where offered) | Yes | No, added only after the trial converts to paid |
| 10% back in the Google Store | Yes, in supported countries | No |
| Extra Gemini 4 Argon allowance in Antigravity | Yes | No; trial accounts are grouped separately |
What changes for you
For most people using the Gemini app, Gmail or Google Docs, nothing changes day to day. Gemini 4 Argon is available in the Gemini app and AI Mode for Pro and Ultra subscribers, as we explained in our guide to Gemini 4 Argon in the Gemini app; the restriction reported this week is specific to Antigravity.
The perk most people will miss is YouTube Premium Lite. Google’s help page says the benefit is added automatically once a trial “converts to a paid subscription,” not before. If you were counting on ad-light YouTube during a six- or twelve-month device trial, you won’t get it.
Trials reported this week include six months with a Pixel 11 or Galaxy Z Fold 8, twelve months with a Googlebook or Chromebook Plus, three months with other Chromebooks, six months for some Verizon customers and a free year for eligible students.
What you can do
- Check whether you’re on a trial. Open the Google One app or one.google.com and look at your membership details; trial memberships show an end date for the free period.
- Decide whether the missing perks matter. If you mainly use Gemini and storage, the trial already covers you. There’s no reason to pay early.
- If you want everything now, contact Google. You can’t simply start paying in the middle of a trial. Google directs people to its Google One support form to convert, and a Google employee has said the company is working on an easier process.
- Set a reminder before the trial ends. Trials usually roll into a paid plan. Decide in advance whether you want to keep paying $19.99 a month or cancel.
- Already have YouTube Premium? Google’s help page notes that the included Premium Lite won’t activate while you have a separate YouTube subscription, so you’d need to cancel that first after converting.
Who is affected, and who isn’t
Affected: anyone using Google AI Pro through a free trial, especially developers who want Gemini 4 Argon in Antigravity and people in countries where YouTube Premium Lite is bundled, such as the US, UK, India, Brazil, Mexico and El Salvador.
Not affected: paying subscribers, including those on discounted paid plans, and free Gemini users. For an overview of which Gemini models each plan gets, see our breakdown of Gemini model access for free, AI Plus and AI Pro users.
FAQ
Is the free AI Pro trial still worth taking?
Yes for most people. The main features, higher Gemini limits, Gemini in Google apps and 5 TB of storage, are included. Just don’t expect YouTube Premium Lite or Store credit until you pay.
Can I cancel my trial and pay to get all the perks?
There’s no simple button for that today. Contact Google One support to ask for a conversion, or wait until the trial ends and becomes a paid plan.
Do students on the free year get Gemini 4 Argon in Antigravity?
According to Android Authority, students on the free year are treated as trial users, while students on discounted paid plans reportedly do get it.
