The quick answer
Samsung published its October 2026 security bulletin on October 6, fixing dozens of Android and Galaxy-specific vulnerabilities, including nine rated critical, with none reported as exploited in the wild. At the same time, the One UI 9 (Android 17) upgrade is spreading: Galaxy S25 owners in the US and Europe and Z Fold 7/Z Flip 7 owners on some US carriers are getting it now, and the Galaxy S24, Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 have started receiving it in South Korea.
What happened
Two separate things are landing on Galaxy phones this week, and it helps to keep them apart.
The October security patch. Samsung’s official security bulletin, dated October 6, lists the fixes going into this month’s maintenance release. It covers devices running Android 14 through Android 17. Samsung’s own bulletin says every issue was privately disclosed, and it does not flag any as actively exploited.
| Patch group | Fixes listed by Samsung |
|---|---|
| Google (Android) patches | 9 critical, 36 high, 3 moderate |
| Samsung Semiconductor | 4 high |
| Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) | 13 (6 high, 7 moderate) |
The Samsung-specific fixes deal with problems such as buffer overflows, improper input validation and access-control mistakes in various Samsung libraries and services. Sammy Fans notes that one of them applies only to selected Android 16 and 17 devices.
The One UI 9 rollout. When we covered One UI 9 for the Galaxy S25, Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 on September 30, it had only reached South Korea. Since then:
- United States: 9to5Google reported on October 5 that carrier versions are rolling out, including the Z Fold 7 on T-Mobile and Verizon, the Z Flip 7 on AT&T, and Galaxy S25 models on Verizon. Unlocked models were expected to follow within days.
- Europe: Sammy Fans reported that the Galaxy S25, S25+ and S25 Ultra began getting One UI 9 in Europe on October 6, with UK users seeing it first in a staged rollout.
- Galaxy S24: SamMobile and Sammy Fans both reported on October 6 that the stable update has started reaching the Galaxy S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra. According to Sammy Fans, it began in South Korea with people who were in the beta program, and other markets should get it from around October 12, though Samsung has not confirmed that date.
- Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6: Sammy Fans reports the stable build is live in South Korea for beta participants, with a wider rollout expected soon.
One detail worth noting: the One UI 9 builds reported so far for the S24 and S25 carry the September 2026 security patch level. That means the October fixes above will arrive in a later update, even if you install One UI 9 today.
What changes for you
If you own a recent Galaxy phone, expect one or two updates over the next few weeks: the One UI 9 upgrade (if your model is eligible) and the October security patch. None of the fixes in this month’s bulletin is known to be under active attack, so there is no emergency, but installing patches promptly is still the simplest way to stay protected.
The One UI 9 download is large for anyone coming from the previous stable version. Sammy Fans puts it at roughly 3.8 to 4GB on the Galaxy S25 series, while beta participants get a much smaller package.
How to check and install
- Check your current patch level. Open Settings, then About phone, then Software information, and look at the Android security patch level.
- Back up first with Samsung Cloud, Google One or Smart Switch, especially before a major upgrade like One UI 9.
- Charge to at least 50% and use Wi-Fi. The full One UI 9 package can be close to 4GB.
- Install the update from Settings, then Software update, then Download and install.
- If nothing appears, wait. Samsung releases updates in waves by country, carrier and model, so availability can take days or weeks.
- Avoid unofficial firmware downloads. The over-the-air update is the safest route.
Keeping your phone’s operating system current matters beyond Samsung’s own fixes. WhatsApp, for example, has started blocking logins on phones with outdated operating systems.
Who it affects and who it doesn’t
| Device | One UI 9 status (as of October 6) |
|---|---|
| Galaxy S26 series | Already rolling out since September |
| Galaxy S25, S25+, S25 Ultra | Rolling out in Korea, the US and Europe |
| Galaxy S25 FE and S25 Edge | Rolling out in the US, including on Verizon |
| Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 | Rolling out in Korea and on some US carriers |
| Galaxy S24, S24+, S24 Ultra | Started in South Korea; other regions expected later |
| Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 | Started in South Korea for beta participants |
| Older or budget Galaxy models | Check Samsung’s support pages for your model |
The October security patch applies more broadly, to supported Galaxy devices running Android 14 through 17, but Samsung delivers it on different schedules: flagships usually first, with mid-range and budget models on monthly or quarterly cycles.
